Different Kinds of Internet Options

(Updated Oct./16)

Understanding The Different Kinds of Internet

Dial-Up

Dial-up is one of the oldest forms of Internet access. It is an unstable / unreliable form of Internet to access. Back in the day, dial up modems were external and as time has gone on most people have become accustomed to having the built-in version. Now, it is very difficult to find any new computer with built-in dial up modem. Dial-up is as it sounds. You access the Internet with your phone line and you can not receive or make phone calls while accessing the Internet.

DSL

DSL became a better choice over dial-up as the user can access the Internet while being able to use you telephone normally. Also, it is more stable and reliable along with higher speed(s) options. Over time this became a popular option.

DSL (DryLoop)

This option simply allows you to have the same Internet access, without access to normal telephone usage.

Cable

Cable Internet became an option a few years later. For several technical reasons and based on my own opinion, I believe that cable Internet access is a better option for speed and reliability.

Wireless

Sometimes wireless services are the only other option for remote Internet users. All the companies advertise this option in their own way. In short, their use of Cellular based systems are similar to your cell phone providers. All of these services have limitations in Canada. Such as, if your operating system requires a major up-date and if the download is too large, you are out of luck. Companies such as Xpornet, Rogers, etc offer just such services.

Third Party Services

There are numerous companies that offer various Internet options such as Vianet, Teksavvy, etc. Many of these companies offer better plans or better prices and most offer better customer service. Bell Canada, Rogers and others like them are the original providers of these services.

Please contact me, if you have any questions.

Intranet

An intranet is a private network accessible only to an organization's staff. Generally a wide range of information and services from the organization's internal IT systems are available that would not be available to the public from the Internet. A company-wide intranet can constitute an important focal point of internal communication and collaboration, and provide a single starting point to access internal and external resources. In its simplest form an intranet is established with the technologies for local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs).

Intranets began to appear in a range of larger organizations from 1994.

Rural Access

Try to stay away from Wireless services. If you have no other option, due to your location, please keep in mind the following:

    1) Taking your computer to friends or family's home to let your computer do the larger updates as wireless services will restrict your access to large size downloads.

    2) Most wireless services do not allow for large bandwidth usage per month. For example, Windows 10 and streaming videos will use up your bandwidth very quickly.

Happy Surfing!
